Most people use a key a dozen times a day and couldn't tell you what it's doing. That's wonderfully fine until the lock fails, the key wears out, and you're sourcing obscure components. The most common mechanical device on the planet is the pin tumbler lock. It's in the overwhelming majority of residential deadbolts, commercial entry hardware, and padlocks worldwide. Not the only lock design out there, but the dominant one. It's mechanically elegant, relatively inexpensive to manufacture at quality, and well understood by anyone in the trade.

What most people don't realize is that a key is just a shaped instruction. It carries no power of its own. No signal, no code, nothing electronic. A piece of precisely cut metal whose profile tells the cylinder's internal components where to go. There's one specific mechanical event that has to occur inside the cylinder for it to open, and the key's only job is to cause that event simultaneously across five or six independent points. Miss even one of them by a few thousandths of an inch and the plug doesn't turn. That precision is where the craft  and where every failure eventual to show lives.
